Publication Ethics
The statement of scientific publication ethics is a code of ethics for all parties involved in the journal publication process, including the managers, editors, reviewers, and authors. The Scientific Publication Ethics Code essentially upholds three ethical values in publishing: (i) Neutrality, meaning freedom from conflicts of interest in the management of publications; (ii) Fairness, meaning granting authorship rights to those who are entitled as authors; and (iii) Honesty, meaning freedom from duplication, fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism in publications.
Responsibilities of Journal Managers
- Determine the journal name, scope of science, regularity, and accreditation if needed.
- Define the membership of the editorial board.
- Define the relationship between the publisher, editor, reviewers, and other parties in a contract.
- Respect confidentiality matters for contributing researchers, authors, editors, and reviewers.
- Implement norms and regulations regarding intellectual property rights, especially copyright.
- Review journal policies and communicate them to authors, editors, reviewers, and readers.
- Create a code of conduct for editors and reviewers.
- Publish the journal regularly.
- Ensure the availability of funding sources for the journal's sustainability.
- Build collaboration networks and marketing.
- Prepare licensing and other legal aspects.
Responsibilities of Editors
- Meet the needs of readers and authors.
- Strive to improve the quality of publications continuously.
- Implement processes to ensure the quality of published works.
- Prioritize objective freedom of opinion.
- Maintain the academic integrity of authors.
- Communicate corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary.
- Be responsible for the style and format of the manuscript, while the content and any statements in the manuscript are the responsibility of the author(s).
- Actively solicit feedback from authors, readers, reviewers, and editorial board members to improve the quality of publications.
- Encourage the evaluation of the journal when issues arise.
- Support initiatives to reduce research and publication errors by requiring authors to submit an Ethics Approval Form from the Research Ethics Committee.
- Support initiatives to educate researchers on publication ethics.
- Evaluate the impact of editorial policies on the attitudes of authors and reviewers and improve them to enhance responsibility and reduce mistakes.
- Be open-minded to new opinions or perspectives that may contradict personal views.
- Do not insist on personal opinions or those of authors or third parties that could lead to biased decisions.
- Encourage authors to make revisions until the manuscript is suitable for publication.
Responsibilities of Reviewers
- Review manuscripts assigned by the editor and submit feedback to the editor, which will be used to determine the suitability of the manuscript for publication.
- Reviewers should not evaluate manuscripts in which they are directly or indirectly involved.
- Maintain the privacy of authors by not disclosing the results of corrections, suggestions, or recommendations, while providing constructive criticism, suggestions, and recommendations.
- Encourage authors to make revisions to the manuscript.
- Reassess the manuscript after revisions, according to established standards.
- Review manuscripts in a timely manner and according to the journal's style guidelines and scientific principles (e.g., data collection methods, authorship legality, conclusions, etc.).
Responsibilities of Authors
- Ensure that all individuals listed as authors meet the criteria for authorship.
- Be collectively responsible for the work and content of the article, including methods, analysis, calculations, and details.
- Disclose sources of funding, both direct and indirect.
- Acknowledge limitations in the research.
- Respond to reviewer comments professionally and promptly.
- Inform the editor if withdrawing the manuscript.
- Declare that the manuscript submitted for publication is original, has not been published elsewhere in any language, and is not under consideration by another publisher.
